FAQ

Why is it called BAHNBRËCKER?

Bahnbrëcker is derived from the German word ‘bahnbrecher,’ which means trailblazer. It was inspired by the German pioneers who settled in New Braunfels in the mid 1800’s.

What is Slow River Blend?

Slow River Blend is a unique blended whiskey we call Hefeweizen Whiskey, distilled from Texan and Midwestern winter wheats macerated with lemon peel and clove.

How is it made? Is it natural?

Slow River Blend is exactly what it says on the front of the label - a blend of aged Wheat Whiskies macerated with lemon peel and clove buds. Our Wheat Whiskeys are aged between 3 to 5 years, and we macerate the lemon peel and clove directly in our blend of Whiskeys.  Our product is 100% craft, and contains absolutely no WONF.

What is WONF?

You may think you’re eating or drinking ‘all natural’ but take a closer look. If the label says ‘with other natural flavors’ then the product is not as ‘real’ as you think. ‘With other natural flavors’, also known as WONF, is food and beverage industry camouflage speak for something that’s not natural at all. Think of it as a molecule that mimics the taste of a particular substance, like lemon, and is far cheaper than using actual Lemons. While the ‘natural flavor’ may have originated in nature somewhere in its history, it is still a chemical like any artificial flavor. It is not a lemon, a vanilla bean, or a Blueberry.  Here are the five key facts you need to know about WONF:

  • WONF stands for ‘with other natural flavors’

  • The ‘natural flavors’ are actually molecules that mimic the taste of a particular substance

  • They can be animal or vegetable in origin

  • It is much cheaper than using the actual plant or animal with that flavor

  • ‘Natural flavors’ are a chemical substance like any artificial flavor

Why is it called Hefeweizen Whiskey?

This is our homage to New Braunfels German roots with a bit of Texan swagger and creativity.  We start with winter “weizen” (wheat in German), and then macerate with lemon peel and clove buds to give it a bit of that Heifenweizen flavor. Prost!

How does Slow River Blend taste?

It’s a smooth, easy drinking whiskey with subtle notes of citrus and spice.  A bit of Heifeweizen-ness in your Whiskey!

Who founded Bahnbrëcker and why?

We are 5 longtime New Braunfels friends, Randy Rogers, Eric Chase, Ash Wineinger, Michael Devers, and Cary Schindler. We love this town. The music, the people, the rivers, and of course the spirit. There’s no place quite like New Braunfels. If those German pioneers who settled here in 1845, had decided that 50 miles east was just far enough to call home, New Braunfels wouldn’t be the place it is today. As a tribute and a thank you to those intrepid spirits, we created Bahnbrëcker, a family of spirits.

How do you like to drink Slow River Blend?

I usually drink it on the rocks but Slow River Blend also tastes great mixed with 7-Up, Coke, Dr. Pepper, or whatever. Of course, it tastes great right out of the bottle.

What are the plans for Bahnbrëcker?

We’re going to start out with Slow River Blend first, but we have some pretty cool things coming down the pike. Our philosophy is to zig to everyone else’s zag - so you can expect some pretty unique, different things in the future. Like New Braunfels, a bit of the unexpected so you keep coming back for more.

Where is Bahnbrëcker available?
